The Misunderstood Comma

The comma is one of the most misunderstood and misused punctuation marks in the entire English language.  Even native speakers with advanced degrees commonly misuse the comma.  While understanding the correct usage of the comma can be confusing, it is not a lost cause.  Learning a few basic comma rules can significantly increase your ability to use that pesky little punctuation mark.  Many people question why it is so important to use commas and other punctuation correctly.  Punctuation helps clarify what sentences are trying to communicate, assists the reader with transitions in ideas, and creates a natural rhythm to the way people think and speak.  Without commas, things would be much harder to read and understand…so respect the comma!
